“TURQUERIES: images from the Ottoman world
in 17th century Europe”
PALAZZO GOPCEVIC – via Rossini, 4
- Periodo: 8 luglio - 3 settembre 2006.
- Orario: tutti i giorni dalle 9.00 alle 19.00.
- Ingresso: libero.
The exhibition organised in Trieste, ho sted by Palazzo Gopcevic – Musei del Canal Grande, is devoted to a selection of ancient Ottoman portraits painted in the Balkans, at the times subject to the Ottoman Empire. These portraits survived the centuries to tell us the story of the ‘fashion’ and costume of the times – the so-called ‘turquerie’ – and, especially, the faces and expressions of the gentlemen and gentlewomen of different lineage who lived in Central Eastern Europe, at the times occupied by the Ottoman conqueror.
The portraits - exhibited in the gorgeous rooms that overlook the Canal Grande of Trieste – are borrowed from the Ptuj Museum (Ljubljana) and represent the core of an exhibition organised by Polona Vidmar that was successfully hosted in Istanbul last summer.
